High accuracy solar reflectance measurements using a portable solar reflectometer

The Surface Optics Optical Properties Measurements Lab providing ASTM C1549 testing services using the 410-Solar handheld reflectometer to determine the solar reflectance of your samples.

What is ASTM C1549?

ASTM C1549-16 is a standard test method developed by ASTM International for measuring the solar reflectance of materials using a portable solar reflectometer. This test method is primarily used for assessing the reflective properties of roofing materials and other surfaces exposed to sunlight. The measurement of solar reflectance is crucial for evaluating the thermal performance of these materials, as it determines how much solar energy is reflected by the surface, which in turn affects heat absorption and overall energy efficiency.

C1549 Testing Process

  1. Sample Preparation: We ensure that your material samples are an appropriate geometry and size to ensure accurate results and prepared according to ASTM C1549 guidelines.

2. Calibration: The 410-Solar portable reflectometer is calibrated using references with known reflectance values.

3. Measurement: We conduct multiple measurements across your material’s surface to ensure comprehensive and representative data.

4. Reporting: Our lab delivers a test report including:

  • A description of the specimen substrate.
  • Temperature and relative humidity of the environment in which measurements were conducted.
  • Measured solar reflectance, average of the measured reflectances, standard deviation, and estimated uncertainty.
  • Air Mass
  • Testing date

4. Sample Return or Disposal: Samples will be returned or disposed upon completion of testing, per customer instructions.
