Optical Properties Measurements

Hemispherical directional reflectance (HDR) measures the fraction of the light incident on a sample at a given angle that is reflected back into the hemisphere. Typical HDR measurements are made out to 25 μm. HDR as a function of reflected polar angle, polarization, wavelength, and temperature.

Emissivity

Emissivity measures a surface’s thermal radiation relative to an ideal black body (0 to 1 scale). An emissivity of 0 indicates a perfect reflector, while 1 signifies a perfect emitter. Accurate emissivity is vital for non-contact temperature measurements and heat transfer calculations, influenced by material, surface, temperature, wavelength, and angle.

Scatter / BSDF

Bidirectional reflectance measurement capabilities span the range from 0.3 μm to beyond 14 μm with a full four degrees of angular freedom (incident polar and azimuthal angle, and reflected polar and azimuthal angle). These measurements are typically made broadband or at a series of customer-specified wavelengths.

ASTM Testing

ASTM standards for optical property testing are developed through a collaborative process involving industry and scientific experts. Surface Optics has actively contributed to defining these testing methodologies, leveraging decades of experience as an optical property testing lab and instrumentation manufacturer.

Absorptance & Emittance

Surface Optics provides precise solar absorptance (α) and thermal emittance (ε) measurements, adhering to ASTM standards for optical property testing. With decades of expertise, we deliver reliable data to support thermal control and material optimization across industries.

SRI / TSR

Solar reflectance measures a material’s ability to reflect solar energy, expressed as a percentage or a value from 0 to 1, where 0 means no reflectance and 1 indicates total reflectance. Backed by decades of expertise, our lab ensures accurate, reliable solar reflectance data to support your project’s success.
